Administrative / Biographical History

Elizabeth Millicent (Sally) Chilver (b 1914) was educated at Benenden School, Cranbrook and at Somerville College, Oxford University, then worked as a journalist, 1937-1939, temporary civil servant, 1939-1945 and journalist at the Daily News, 1945-1947. She was Principal and Secretary of the Colonial Social Science and Research Council and Colonial Economic Research Committee, Colonial Office, 1948-1957. She held the posts of Director, University of Oxford Institute of Commonwealth Studies, 1957-1961, Senior Research Fellow, University of London Institute of Commonwealth Studies, 1961-1964, Principal, Bedford College, University of London, 1964-1971 and Fellow, 1974. She was a member of the Royal Commission on Medical Education, 1965-1968, a trustee of the British Museum, 1970-1975, Principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, 1971-1979 and Honorary Fellow, 1979. She was a member of the Governing Body, School of Oriental and Asian Studies, University of London, 1975-1980. She was editor of History of East Africa, Vol. 2 (Oxford; Clarendon Press; 1963-1976).
