Fragmentary collection of programmes, governance and marketing items, financial information and press cuttings given to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland archives upon the cessation of the Glasgow Bach Society.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Glasgow Bach Choir was established in 1906 in light of the wider Bach Choir movement which occured in the United Kingdom in the late nineteenth to twentieth century. This movement began with the creation of the London Bach Choir, which was formed in 1875 with the sole purpose of giving the first complete British peformance of J.S. Bach's 'Mass in B minor'. The choir continued and developed over the years to perform many of Bach's works. The popularity of the choir led to a nation-wide creation of Bach Choirs, the Glasgow Bach Choir being one.
