Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Before the introduction of Civil Probate in 1858, wills were usually proved in the diocesan ecclesiastical courts. Probate records relating to the diocese of Bangor from 1635 to 1858 were deposited in the National Library of Wales in about 1945. Dr Lewis Lloyd (1939-1997) of Llanfair, Merionethshire, was a lecturer at Coleg Harlech from 1968. From the mid 1970s he published numerous works on maritime history and wrote histories of Aberdyfi and Barmouth, Merionethshire, and Pwllheli and Caernarfon, Caernarfonshire. Lloyd purchased copies of probate documents relating mainly to the hundred of Ardudwy, Merionethshire, from the National Library of Wales.
