The papers consist chiefly of correspondence, personal and official, from John Holles and Thomas Pelham Holles to Molyneux. Such correspondence concerns the implementation of orders from the Privy Council for the identification and seizure of papists. There are also references to the County Militia, the boundaries of Sherwood Forest and the Nottinghamshire elections of 1715. The personal correspondence includes Sir Francis' attempts to acquire an Army position for his son with the assistance of prominent men such as the Earl of Bridgwater, the Duke of Bolton and the Duke of Marlborough. There are also some miscellaneous items relating to the Molyneux family, from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including a marriage settlement and genealogy.

Custodial History
The collection was purchased from an unknown vendor in February 1922. However, it is clearly part of the Molyneux family archive, deposited with the University of Nottingham Library in 1977 by Lord Carnarvon. Both collections include letters to Sir Francis from the 1st and 2nd Dukes of Newcastle, and documents noted on a handwritten list of papers within this collection are dispersed throughout the 1977 deposit. Furthermore, a letter from Savile Foljambe to Lady Carnarvon (Molt 5/9) indicates that both collections were once in her possession.
