Administrative / Biographical History

The firm of Messrs Poole, solicitors, was based in Caernarfon, Caernarfonshire. It was established by Richard Poole (fl. 1771-1812) of Beaumaris, Anglesey. The business was continued by his eldest son, Owen Anthony Poole (d. 1823), of Beaumaris and later Bangor, Caernarfonshire. The firm participated in Caernarfonshire public life, acting at times as Clerks of the Peace and as clerks to general meetings of the Lord Lieutenant of Caernarfonshire. The Lord Lieutenant from 1781 to 1822 was Lord Bulkeley (1752-1822) of Baron Hill, Anglesey. Poole acted as agents in North Wales for the Owen family of Orielton, Pembrokeshire, and Bodeon, Llangadwaladr, Anglesey. Among the firm's most important clients were the Paget family of Plâs-Newydd, Llanfairpwll, Anglesey, notably Henry Bayly Paget (1744-1812), created Earl of Uxbridge in 1784, and his son, Sir Henry William Paget (1768-1854), 2nd Earl, created 1st Marquis of Anglesey in 1815.
