John Charles Hughes, of Bryndedwydd, Dolgellau, Merionethshire, was a solicitor. He married Helen Jones on 15th April 1879. Their only son, Reginald Turner Hughes, of 37 Belsize Park Gardens, London, also a solicitor, died at the age of 45 in 1925. They also had three daughters, Helen Elizabeth Katharine Haines, Olive Harris, and Louisa Mary White. John Charles Hughes was authorized to practice as a solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1916. The Vaughan Scholarship, restricted to the sons of freeholders of Merionethshire or a native of the county or one whose parents was a native of the county, was established by Deed Poll under the seals of Sir Robert Vaughan of Nannau and others. J. R. Hughes was secretary of The Merioneth Association of Independent Friendly Societies. John Charles Hughes & Co. accumulated papers relating to its clients interests, including deeds, wills and leases, and was involved in local government and charity administration.
