Scope and Content

PHOTOGRAPH: Archaeological investigation of graves at Gaerwen. [Capel Eithin]

Administrative / Biographical History

Despite the name, excavations on the Capel Eithin site failed to identify a chapel structure. Instead a long sequence of activity from the Neolithic to the early medieval period was demonstrated. The remains included a stone built Roman structure, 6.5m square, set within an earlier, possibly ritual enclosure. These have been intepreted either as a temple, shrine, or a military tower
