Scope and Content

The collection contains a near complete set of photojournalistic work produced by Tom Jenkins between 1988 and 2004.

Administrative / Biographical History

Tom Jenkins was born in 1968 in Kent. Between 1987 and 1989 he studied on the two-year diploma course in documentary photography under David Hurn and Daniel Meadows at Newport Gwent College of Higher Education and then became a freelance photographer for agency Allsport and the newspapers The Independent and Sunday Telegraph. He became a Guardian photographer in 1990 under picture editor Eamonn McCabe and since 1993 he has also been an Observer photographer. In 1990 he was awarded the Young Press Photographer of the Year and in April 2003 he was awarded the Sport for All Picture of the Year prize at the British Sports Journalism awards for his photograph of schoolgirls in Sheffield playing tag rugby at Twickenham before the England v South Africa test in autumn 2002. Other major awards include: Sports Journalism Awards (SJA) Sports Photographer of the Year (2003, 2004); SJA Sports Portfolio of the Year (2004, 2011); SJA Specialist Sports Portfolio of the Year (2003); SJA Sports News Picture (2004); SJA Sports News Picture (2004); Rugby Photographer of the Year (2003); What the Papers Say Photograph of the Year (2004); British Press Awards Sports Photographer of the Year (2003, 2005, 2006); Barclays Photographer of the Season (2008/9); Press Photographers Year Olympic Single Picture (2009); Barclays Shot of the Season (2011/12); Press Photographers Year Olympic Portfolio (2009); Press Photographers Year Sports Portfolio (2009) and Picture Editors' Guild Awards Sports Photographer of the Year (2015). In 2012 the book 'In the Moment - The Sports Photography of Tom Jenkins' was published to coincide with the London Olympic Games and supported by a solo exhibition at Kings Place, London and Northumbria University, Newcastle
