Administrative / Biographical History
Robert Dawson, the creator of these maps, was born in Devon in 1798. It appears that he entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and eventually became Lieutenant Colonel. He died in 1861.
In 1791, a Board of Ordnance began a survey of England's southern coast, by order of the government. This resulted in a third of England and Wales being mapped at the one inch scale. In 1824 it was ordered that a detailed 6 inch to the mile survey be made.
