Watercolour sketches of the English Lake District by Reverend John Eagles (1783-1855), artist and writer, 1812

The paintings are contained in a small sketchbook entitled '6 Views of The Lakes 1812 by John Eagles'. The first page bears the date 22 September 1812 and the name of the town, Keswick where Eagles was probably based during his visit to the Lakes. His watercolours, in pencil and grey wash, are of Grasmere, Rydal House and Rydal Water, Ullswater, a pass near Buttermere, and Borrowdale.

John Eagles was born in the parish of St Augustine, Bristol in 1783, the son of Thomas Eagles (1748-1812), a classical scholar. He was educated at Winchester College and later, with a view to ordination, at Wadham College, Oxford (BA 1812, MA 1818). His curacies were at St. Nicholas, Bristol; Hambleton, Devon; Winford, Bristol; and Kinnersley, Herefordshire. Eagles was a keen painter, etcher and poet. In 1841, he retired and returned to Bristol where he died in 1855.
