This collection includes: national executive committee minutes and papers; annual general meetings minutes and papers; annual conference papers; Education Social Work Training Advisory Group minutes and papers; general correspondence and papers; subject files; periodical and other publications; regional records.

Administrative / Biographical History

The assocation was founded in 1917 as the Association of Superintendents of School Attendance Departments for England and Wales "to watch over the interests and safeguard the welfare of child life, and to secure legislation in furtherance of these objectives". It subsequently adopted the following names: Association of Superintendents of Education Welfare and Attendance Departments, 1953-1962; National Association of Chief Education Welfare Officers, 1962-1976; Association of Chief Education Social Workers, 1976-1997; Association for Education Welfare Management, 1997 to date. In 2019, its website stated that it provided "professional support for Managers in Education Social Work (ESW), the Education Welfare Service (EWS) and safeguarding in education."

Custodial History

Many of these records, especially in the subject files and publications sereis, were apparently those of Brain Field, president of the Association of Chief Education Social Workers, 1985-1986, and earlier a member of the Education Welfare Officers' National Association.
