Scope and Content

Records of the Risca Coal and Iron Company.. The collection consists of financial records only, namely pay books for the works at Risca.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1836 John Russell purchased workings in the Waunfawr area for £50,000 and opened the Black Vein Colliery on the site in 1841. Russell formed the Risca Coal and Iron Company in 1847 to run the pit. In 1866 Thomas Rhodes bought the colliery which he then sold on to the London and South Wales Colliery Company in 1872.
