Mae cymuned Gwalchmai wedi'i lleoli tua 5 milltir o dref Llangefni ar Ynys Môn. Enw priodol y plwyf yw Trewalchmai. Mae cysylltiad rhwng enw'r plwyf a Gwalchmai ap Meilyr (1130-1180), un o'r beirdd cynharaf yn Llys y Tywysogion Cymreig. Rhoddwyd y tir i'r bardd am ei wasanaeth i Dywysog Owain Gwynedd. Gwalchmai Uchaf oedd y pentref gwreiddiol, gyda'r rhan fwyaf o'r boblogaeth yn byw yn agos at safle Eglwys y Plwyf. Yr Ysgol Genedlaethol, a agorwyd ym 1856, oedd yr ysgol gyntaf yn y pentref, ac fe'i rheolwyd gan Eglwys Loegr. Roedd 43 o blant yn mynychu'n rheolaidd. Mewn cystadleuaeth, agorwyd Ysgol Brydeinig yn Gwalchmai Uchaf. Enw'r ysgol bellach yw Ysgol y Ffridd.
The community of Gwalchmai is situated about 5 miles from the town of Llangefni on the Isle of Anglesey. The proper name of the parish is Trewalchmai . There is a connection between the name of the parish and Gwalchmai ap Meilyr (1130-1180), one of the earliest poets at the Court of the Welsh Princes. The lands were given to the poet for his services to Prince Owain Gwynedd.
Upper Gwalchmai was the original village, with most of the population living close to the site of the Parish Church. The National School, which was opened in 1856, was the first school in the village, and managed by the Church of England. There were 43 children attending regularly. In competition, a British School was opened in Upper Gwalchmai. The school is now called Ysgol y Ffridd.
