Administrative / Biographical History

Kenneth Rowland Harris was born 1905 in Neath. He was brought up in St Mellons and educated at Cardiff High School. During the 1930s he worked as a features editor on the Western Mail and was recruited to the Ministry of Information (MOI) during the Second World War. Working on Cathedral Road he helped create the MOI's 'Guide to Local Panel of Speakers and Subjects'. At this time he established the Club for Czechoslovaks in Cardiff. He subsequently became editor and publisher of the Glamorgan County Magazine between about 1948 and 1952 working from an office in Park Place. From 1952 to 1973 he was owner and editor of the Penarth Times and managing director of the associated company Pickford Printers. He founded the Penarth Civic Society and was its Chairman. He was also a founder of the Welsh Motor Rally. Kenneth Rowland Harris died March 1973 and was survived by his wife Gwynlais Harris and son, Roger.

Kenneth Rowland Harris was a cousin of Peter and Phillip Jones of Pen-y-Peel Farm, St Mellons. Philip Jones, grandfather of Peter and Phillip travelled to Australia during the goldrush of the 1850s and upon his return farmed at Pen-y-Peel as did his son, William.
