Scope and Content

Papers of Richard Johnson relating primarily to his work as lecturer in and later director of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies but also including research papers and correspondence generated as part of his academic career. Material consists of administrative materials relating to the work of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies; teaching and research materials produced by sub-groups of the Centre; papers relating to postgraduate and undergraduate courses and administrative records; Johnson's research materials for and correspondence with members of History Workshop, for various conference papers, and work undertaken with other members of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies as a result of discussions within various sub-groups, particularly the Cultural History group, the Education group, and the Media group.

Administrative / Biographical History

Richard Johnson was born in 1939. He studied for a BA in History at Clare College, Cambridge, and was awarded a PhD in History by Cambridge in 1968. He was appointed lecturer in Social History at the University of Birmingham in 1966, and moved to a post as senior lecturer in the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in 1974. He was appointed its Director in 1979. He withdrew from the Directorship in 1987, continuing to work as senior lecturer in the Department of Cultural Studies and Sociology, the successor department to the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, until 1993. He took up a post as Reader in the Centre for Research in International Communication and Culture, Faculty of Humanities at Nottingham Trent University in 1994 and was appointed Professor of Cultural Studies there in 1996. He retired in 2004 but continued to undertake part time work at Nottingham Trent, mainly supervising theses. He also took up a post as a part time tutor for the Workers Educational Association in 2004, lecturing on aspects of contemporary history and culture. He continues to run occasional sessions on research skills at Nottingham Trent University and to be involved as a part-time organiser for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Arrangement

The papers have been arranged into six series. US119/1-US119/4 contain material relating to the work of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies while US119/5 and US119/6 contain material relating to Johnson's wider academic career while a member of the Centre
