The collection forms part of the archive of the British Clothing Industry Association (MSS.222), in which the records of various predecessor and related organisations are contained.

The London Tie Manufacturers' Association originated in a meeting of employers on 21 August 1916 in response to a circular issued by the Tie Cutters' Union. It was formally constituted on 14 September 1916. It incorporated the Association of Tie Manufacturers, supplying the wholesale trade. A condition of membership in these early years was that no member would employ cutters at more than 42 shillings a week. (At the request of the Association it seems tie workers were included in the scope of the Shirtmaking Trade Board in 1921). In 1920 the LMTA became affiliated to the Shirt and Collar Manufacturers' Federation which then changed its name to the Shirt, Collar and Tie Manufacturers' Federation. The LMTA changed its name to the Tie Manufacturers' Association in April 1945.
