Scope and Content

The collection contains a volume holding a manuscript translation by R.F.B. Hodgkinson of an account book for St Peter's Church in Nottingham for the period 1459-1648. The translation follows the structure of the original volume, which is now in Nottinghamshire Archives. The principal components of the volume are accounts for the guilds of St George (1459-1545/6) and St Mary (1515-1540/1) founded at the Church. Hodgkinson also transcribed churchwardens' accounts (1521-1648) for the church, which were recorded amongst the guild accounts. The collection includes a typescript introduction to the translation by Professor L.D.V. Owen, a few scraps of manuscript notes and a letter to Professor Owen written by 'A.C.W.' in 1929 with reference to additional information discovered at the Public Record Office about the guild book.

The translation by Hodgkinson and introduction by Professor L.D.V. Owen were published after Hodgkinson's death in volume seven of the Record Series of the Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire (1939).

Administrative / Biographical History

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Frank Byron Hodgkinson was educated at Rugby School. He lived in Newark, Nottinghamshire. He was a keen local historian and an active council member of the Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire. He died on 9 August 1928.

Religious guilds attached to parishes throughout England were founded under licence by the Crown and served primarily social and philanthropic purposes. The date of the foundation of the guilds of St Peter's is not clear. There are references to a guild at the church as early as 1379 and the foundation of the Guild of St George is recorded as 1440. Hodgkinson's research covers the period 1459-1546 for the guild of St George and 1515-1541 for the guild of St Mary.

Leonard V.D. Owen was Professor of History at University College Nottingham. His interests included local history.

Arrangement

The collection has been divided into three sections containing the volume, the typescript introduction, and other papers.
