Scope and Content

Pedigree of the family of Shaw Stewart of Ardgowan and Blackhall, Renfrewshire.

Tracing descent from Robert III, king of Scotland, to John Shaw Stewart [d.1812].

Administrative / Biographical History

The Shaw Stewart family: Robert III, king of Scotland, granted the lands of Ardgowan to his illegitimate son John Stewart in 1403; John also held the lands of Auchingoun and Blackhall, all in Renfrewshire. These lands were erected into a barony in 1579. Sir Michael Stewart, 3rd baronet of Blackhall, married the daughter of the heiress of the Shaws of Greenock; their son John was the first Shaw-Stewart and became 4th baronet of Greenock and Blackhall. The Ardgowan estate still belongs to the Shaw Stewarts.
