A considerable part of the collection appears to relate to John Campbell, later John Campbell Bayard, and to his eldest son, Francis Campbell Bayard. The correspondence in the collection (dated 1890s) is largely that of Francis Campbell Bayard of Hillmorton Lodge, Wallington, Surrey; he appears to have had an interest in researching the Bayard family. Some of the legal material relates to a legal case in which he was involved in connection with his father's estate, 1897. There are also papers relating to the Bayard family generally (pedigrees, family trees, lists, notes etc) and other documents created by or associated with various individual Bayards and of other related families (title deeds, marriage settlements, wills etc).
The collection comprises: Deeds, 1707-1897, including wills, probate records, leases, mortgages, assignment and trust, releases, marriage settlements; miscellaneous documents, 1774-1877, including accounts of legal cases and printed documents; documents relating to family history , 1585-1851; correspondence, 1891-1896; miscellaneous press cuttings and articles,1825-1915.
