Scope and Content

Records of the Chatterley Mining Company and its later incarnation the Chatterley Whitfield Mining Company. The collection includes: managers' monthly report book, 1874-1877; minute books, 1893-1926; committee minutes, materials relating to technical affairs, travelling cranes, winding rope, output of sale of coal in different parts of England; 17 volumes of photos showing mine shafts, pit heads, railways and trains; signal boxes and waggons. The collection also includes typescripts of Jack's own contributions to North Staffordshire railway and mining history.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Jack worked for the Chatterley Whitfield Colliery Ltd, 1928-1957. His family connections with the Chatterley firm go back to 1870. Jack wrote a history of the colliery, History of Chatterley Whitfield Railways. William Jack photographed and also collected photographs of North Staffordshire collieries, railways and mineral workings.
