Thomas Frederick Chavasse, son of Dr Thomas Chavasse of Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield (d 1884), came from a family of distinguished doctors.
He was appointed as assistant surgeon at the Birmingham General Hospital in 1877 and he continued to serve this hospital as a surgeon for more than 30 years. He contributed to medical literature on surgical subjects and was regarded as an authority on surgical science in relation to cancer.
He died at home in Barnt Green, Worcestershire following a hunting acident aged 58. He was married to Frances (only daughter of Arthur Ryland) and had a son and three daughters.
