Contains an index to the volume, followed by autograph manuscript notes written in 1886-1887 on various aspects of different species of the Desmidieae illustrated by many hand-drawn plates, some of which are coloured. On the title-page there is a dedication written in a second hand to the memory of 'good old Cooke', that is, Dr Mordecai Cubitt Cooke, and a small newspaper cutting from the Daily Mail for 16 November 1914 announcing his death at 89 years.
