Papers of Robert Shedden, 1775-1856, held in the Small Collection

Scope and Content

Robert Shedden's family was a junior branch of the Scottish family, Shedden of Roughwood. He married Millicent Munro and had one child Ellen. They lived at Brooklands, Hampshire and Mary Church, Devon. It was the Hampshire link which was the important one; in 1822 he was Deputy Lieutenant and Sheriff of the county. There is only one box of papers and they throw very little additional light on his life in general. One set of papers result from his period as Deputy Lieutenant and Sheriff and specifically concern the rural agitation in Hampshire at that time, the other contains some of the records of his financial transactions, most notably those involving railway shares. There are also some more miscellaneous items. The papers came to Nuffield College Library with G.D.H. Cole's other collections when he died in 1959.

See Small Collection description for other sub-collections.
