Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
HMS Challenger set out to collect specimens from different depths of water across the globe. The voyage took place between 1872 and 1876.
It is thought that this was the first expedition to routinely use photography to document the journey. There was a darkroom on board so photographs could be developed on the ship.
