Newborough Mat Makers Association, Niwbwrch, Anglesey, was active between 1913 and 1940. Newborough (Niwbwrch) had a long history as a centre for the manufacture of rush mats, active since 1750, using the marram grass growing on sand dunes to the west of the village; the mats were used to cover hay-stacks. The industry had declined in the late 19th century, and in 1913 the Association was formed as a cooperative to make and sell the mats, at the instigation of Col. Stapleton Cotton of Llanfair Pwllgwyn; previously, the mats had been bartered with local shopkeepers for goods, leaving the shopkeepers to transport and sell them further afield. By the 1930s, demand for the hay-stack covers was falling, and the industry disappeared shortly afterwards.
