Pen y Caerau Woollen Mill Accounts

A collection of six account books of the Pen y Caerau Woollen Mill, situated near Aberdaron on the Llyn peninsula, 1873 - 1912

The woollen industry played an important part amongst Welsh industries up until the mid-nineteenth century. According to J. Geraint Jenkins in The Welsh Woollen Industry (1969), power looms were introduced into the industry in the eighteen eighties and nineties. Nevertheless, not all mills were equipped with modern power-driven looms, many, like the Pencaerau mill in Llyn, were still producing with hand-looms early in the present century. At least two people were employed at the mill between 1870 and 1912 when it finally closed.
