Henry St John Basil Armitage (1924-2004)

Born 5 May 1924. Educated St Bede’s and Bradford Grammar Schools, Lincoln Christ’s Hospital and Cambridge University. Served in Arab Legion and British Military Mission to Ibn Saud. Worked in desert locust control in Kenya and Aden and served 1952- 1959 in Oman’s Sultan’s Armed Forces. Worked in Libyan oil industry and from 1962 became a business consultant in Beirut and joined the diplomatic service. Served as in Baghdad as First Secretary (commercial) and then in Saudi Arabia followed by the United Arab Emirates. He was British Consul-General at the British Embassy in Dubai. Awarded in 1968 OBE and in 1978 CBE. In 1956 married Jennifer Burford (one son and one daughter). Died 19 October 2005.
