Administrative / Biographical History

Saint David's Day is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on 1 March, the date of his death in 589 AD. The feast has been celebrated regularly since the canonization of David in the 12th century, by Pope Callixtus II. Traditional celebrations include dressing daffodils and leeks, recognized symbols of Wales and St. David respectively, eating traditional Welsh food including Welsh soup and harp, and women wearing traditional Welsh dress. The growing number of cities and towns across Wales including Cardiff, Swansea and Aberystwyth are also holding parades throughout the day. Saint David/Dewi was born in Caerfai, south-west Wales into an aristocratic family. The Vale of Roses (Valley of the Roses) on the west Pembrokeshire promontory where St. David's Cathedral stands today.
