Scope and Content

A collection of papal bulls and receipts, some of which were addressed to the archbishop (nos. 5, 12, 28, 32, 67, 75, 80, 93, 96, 110 [originals] and 79a-e [copies]) but the majority of which relate to monastic houses.

Documents issued by the popes (nos. 1-127, incl. 94a and 97a)

Documents issued by the papal officers and officials of the Curia (nos. 128-135, incl. 128b, 128c, 129b and 129c)

Arrangement

Originally arranged by A.C. Ducarel in the 18th cent. and bound up as MSS. 643-644; disbound, arranged chronologically and sequentially numbered in 1960.

Custodial History

Documents came to Lambeth following the dissolution of the monasteries. Detailed discussion of the composition and custodial history of the collection in Professor Sayers' catalogue. Formerly MSS 643-644.

[Anonymous annotation in the Reading Room copy of M.R. James: 'Some of these bulls are endorsed with a note of their exhibition (in the Faculty Office?) in 1537, which is similar to endorsements on papal and other indults in Carte Misc. IV q.v.'].
