The Baptist College began when Abergavenny Academy was founded in 1807, in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire by the Rev. Micah Thomas (1778-1853) who acted as president until 1835. In 1836, a new college was opened in Pontypool, Monmouthshire. In 1893, the college was removed to Cardiff, Glamorgan, where a hostel in Richmond Road, previously used for women students attending the university was acquired. The College students were able to attend Cardiff University (formerly University College of Wales Cardiff).
