Abercarn Urban District Council Records

Records of Abercarn Local Board, 1892-1897, and Abercarn Urban District Council, 1897-1974.

Abercarn Urban District Council (UDC), Monmouthshire, was established in 1897 under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. The Council comprised a number of councillors and a chairman and replaced Abercarn Local Board. Its responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector. Abercarn UDC was abolished in 1974, becoming part of the new Borough of Islwyn.
