Matthew Owen, poet of Llangar in Merionethshire, was a composer of englynion and cywyddau and is known to have also written an elegy to Sir John Owen of Clenennau as well as this elegy to Simon Thelwall. He died in 1679.
Simon Thelwall of Plas y Ward in Denbighshire was the son of Edward Thelwall. His second wife was Lady Margaret daughter of Edmund, Lord Sheffield and Earl Mulgrave of Botterwick. Simon Thelwall died in September 1655.
