Scope and Content

Material collected by R. Tudur Jones from the secretaries of congregational chapels in north Wales and others individuals, the intention being to write an appendix, dating from 1891to1954, to the work of Dr Thomas Rees and Dr John Thomas on the history of congregational churches in Wales, Hanes eglwysi annibynol Cymru. Contains material on churches located in the following geographical areas : Llyn and Eifionydd, North Caernarfonshire, Denbigh and Flint, Merioneth, Anglesey, England.

Also, a dissertation entitled The Life Work and Thought of Vavasor Powell (1617-1670) submitted for the degree of D. Phil in 1947 at Oxford and a graph showing the growth of non-conformism in Merioneth between 1700-1899.

Administrative / Biographical History

Robert Tudur Jones was born in 1921 in Llanystymdwy, Caernarfonshire. He became a Congregational minister at Aberystwyth and was later made Principal of the Bala-Bangor College in Bangor. He was a prolific writer on religious and political topics. Amongst his publications are Hanes Annibynwyr Cymru (1966) and Ffydd ac Argyfwng Cenedl : Cristionogaeth a Diwylliant yng Nghymru 1890-1914 (1975).

Arrangement

Papers have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts. The material relating to the history of congregational churches has been divided into geographical areas.
