LSE Students' Union
In the early years of the LSE staff and students would meet at afternoon tea hours organised by the Director's Secretary Christian Mactaggart (1861 - 1943). In 1897 these sessions were formalised when the Students' Union was founded. It was initially known as the Economic Students' Union.
The mission statement of the Students' Union is to:'...advance the interests, welfare and corporate life of its membership. As facilitator of student life, the Union ensures and maintains the provision of commercial, social, educational and sporting services across campus. It is solidly committed to the effective promotion of equal opportunities and diversity in representing and safeguarding the interests of all LSE students'. Every year two students are elected to sit on LSE Council, the decision making body which controls the overall direction of the school.
