Material relates to Hugh W. Jones of Bodfeurig, Anglesey while he was a student at Aberystwyth University and at the City & Guilds Institute in London between 1882 and 1888. It includes letters from his family, his father mainly, giving him advice on life and study. One such piece of advice written by his father in a letter shortly after Hugh's arrival at university advises him not to read any "useless books" and to always "act according to your own sense of what is right and noble". There is also one detailed letter from a friend studying metallurgy at Freiberg describing university life there. The collection also contains a small notebook recording Hugh's personal expenses while in London, and a testimonial from the Professor of Engineering and a letter from the City & Guilds regarding his diploma in engineering from that institute.
