Administrative / Biographical History

The accounts were kept by the donor's father, F.E. Talbot. In 1916, after working for A.W. Hall and Sons, corn merchants, of Battersea, he took up farming at Hermitage, Berkshire. In the early thirties, at the peak of the depression, he began to explore the possibilities of pork dealing, buying in Berkshire and retailing to London butchers. This business is now (July 1966) extensive. Until recently, the business, carried on by the donor and her husband, was associated with intensive pig fattening at Hermitage, Berkshire and High Wood, Shaw, Berkshire. The family still farms.
