Scope and Content

SETTLEMENT [large document] on the marriage of James Williams, esq., with Lady Mary Fortescue of lands in the Counties of Devon and Carmarthen and Declaration of Uses of two Recoveries to be suffered on the same property.

Settlement includes a schedule listing the names of the parishes and tenements, and the names of tenants. The parishes listed are as follows:

• Llansawel Parish

• Talley Parish

• Llandeilo Fawr and Talley parishes

• Gilgcwin parish (Cil y Cwm?)

• Pencarreg parish

• Llandeilo Fawr and Talley parishes

• Llanfihangel fach cilfargen

• Llangathen Parish

• Llansadwrn Parish

Also includes:

• Messuage lands and tenements in the copyhold Lordship of Talley

• Quit rents in the parish of Llanegwad

Seals affixed.

Dated: 1823 Jan. 31.

Added on the reverse skins in 1846, the following:

APPOINTMENT of the Hon. and Revd. John Fortescue to be a new Trustee in the place of Lewis William Burke, esq., retired, of the within written settlement.

ASSIGNMENT of a certain Manor, Recoveries, Messuages, Gardens, farmlands, advowsons tithes and hereditments situate in the Counties of Devon and Carmarthen for the residue of a term of 1000 years.

Dated 1st January 1846.

Added: “(see notice within at the foot of this appointment)

See Indenture dated 3rd June 1823 endorsed on the back of the 2nd skin and notices endorsed on the back of the 25th skin.”

Administrative / Biographical History

Lady Mary Fortescue Filleigh, was the daughter of Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fotestcue and Hester Grenville. She married Sir James Hamlyn Williams of Edwinsford, Carms., and Clovelly, Devon in 1823.
