Scope and Content

The cover of the notebook bears the title: 'Malt made and licensed in the years 1810 and 1811'; in fact, entries in the volume are dated up to 1814. Each page contains five columns: date, the name of the person whose malt was licensed, and the weight in terms of quarters, stones and pounds. Most of the volume is made up of this type of entry. The name of Henry Daws occurs regularly. The volume includes a few loose leaves, detailing accounts of unpaid duty on barley and malt.

Administrative / Biographical History

It is difficult to judge from internal evidence whether the account book which comprises this collection was the property of someone producing malt, licensing it, or collecting duty from it. Although no documented provenance is available, the notebook was probably compiled by a local maltster or malt licenser. Several references to the name Henry Daws, and a similarity of handwriting, suggests a link between these records and a separate volume, which records accounts of a Henry Daws, identified in them as a maltster or brewer and a Justice of the Peace in Nottinghamshire (See GB 159 56-60).
