200 x 250 mm. Head and shoulders portrait. The image is stamped on the reverse with the date '5 Aug 1958' and also 'Public Relations Office, Fiji Official photograph.'

Administrative / Biographical History

Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (22 April 1888-30 May 1958) was a Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman, and is regarded as Fiji's founding father.

Ratu Sakuna donated some furniture to the R.C.S. in 1958, as described in: Simpson, D (ed.) (1958), 'Furnishing of the inner Library', The Royal Commonwealth Society, Library Notes, New Series no. 20, p 8. Unfortunately, Ratu Sakuna died whilst travelling to England for the formal presentation. Sir Harry Luke's tribute to him is published in the R.C.S. Library Notes (1958) 'Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, K.C.M.G., K.B.E., K.B.E., Méd. Mil.' New Series no. 20, pp. 1-2.
