Administrative / Biographical History
The Local Government Act of 1972 came into effect on 1 April 1974. According to Brian Barber, writing in the Society of Archivists Diploma Training Manual, The urban and rural district, municipal and the county borough councils were abolished and larger districts were created. These were given responsibility for housing, local planning, minor roads, parks, museums and galleries, refuse collection and public health inspection.
