Scope and Content

The second sub-file of correspondence (SZ/DF/2/2) was formerly among SZ's personal files as CSA to HM Government (old file reference M/60). The correspondence is largely given over to arrangements for the Ditchley Conferences, which SZ attended from time to time.

The Ditchley Papers (File SZ/DF/7) are published pamphlets on a wide range of subjects.

The conferences (File SZ/DF/9) were broad in scope. Those represented in this series addressed: the problem of the nuclear deterrent in the context of British-American relations (1963); technological changes and the consequences for national economies (1967); environmental control (1970); the Arctic Ocean (1971); and the regulation of technological advance, a series, of which the first was on public health (1976). Sub-file SZ/DF/9/3 is also originally from Solly Zuckerman's Cabinet Office[ CSA] personal files (old file reference M/44).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Ditchley Foundation was founded in 1958 with the object of establishing a permanent centre for discussions and meetings to further the cause of Anglo-American understanding in all fields - academic, scientific, economic and political - using as this centre a large English country house, Ditchley Park in Oxfordshire [brochure, The Ditchley Project, 1958?]. The house was given to the Foundation by H.D.W. Wills, together with a substantial endowment. There was a complementary American Ditchley Foundation. Solly Zuckerman was a governor of the Foundation.
