Aled Eames was born at Llandudno in 1921. He served as a seaman aboard H.M.S. Narcissus in WW2. He took a degree in history and was a lecturer in Education at University College of North Wales, Bangor. He is the author of a number of studies in maritime history.
Detlef Wagner, built by W. Thomas & Sons, Amlwch in 1891 was a British barquentine of 225 tons. On May 28th, 1917, Detlef Wagner, on a voyage from Lisbon to Jersey, with a cargo of wine, was sunk by gunfire by the German submarine UC-72 (Ernst Voigt), 5 miles west of Ar men lighthouse, Isle de Sein. There were no casualties.
