BOOK PLATE: Workers in William Thomas' shipyard, Amlwch getting ready for the launching of the Detlef Wagner in 1891

The photograph is from Ships and Seamen of Anglesey by Aled Eames.

Aled Eames was born at Llandudno in 1921. He served as a seaman aboard H.M.S. Narcissus in WW2. He took a degree in history and was a lecturer in Education at University College of North Wales, Bangor. He is the author of a number of studies in maritime history.

Detlef Wagner, built by W. Thomas & Sons, Amlwch in 1891 was a British barquentine of 225 tons. On May 28th, 1917, Detlef Wagner, on a voyage from Lisbon to Jersey, with a cargo of wine, was sunk by gunfire by the German submarine UC-72 (Ernst Voigt), 5 miles west of Ar men lighthouse, Isle de Sein. There were no casualties.
