Administrative / Biographical History

The land tax was a national tax levied on landowners from the 1692. The earliest records for Anglesey date from the mid 18th century. The returns for parishes record the names of owners and occupiers and the sum for which they were assessed. In 1745 an act specified that freeholders should be entitled to vote only if they were assessed for the Land Tax and in 1780, a further act reinforced this requirement. Copies of the assessments were kept by the Clerks of the Peace. Between 1713 and 1775, the tax rate in the pound (originally four shillings) varied between one and four shillings before being permanently fixed at four shillings from 1776. In 1798, the Land Tax Redemption Office was created under a registrar, and the Land Tax became a perpetual charge, which could be redeemed by the payment of a lump sum and landowners were thereby exonerated. Land Tax was finally abolished by the Finance Act 1963.
