Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
For the first half of its existence the Liberal Party was fairly conservative, and saw its principal task as changing the minds of the white electorate. It supported a qualified franchise. The Sharpeville massacre and the subsequent state of emergency altered the party's perspective. In the 1960s, the Liberal Party supported a democratic, non-racial South Africa. The party disbanded in 1968.
