Miscellaneous English autographs

Miscellaneous English autographs, 1870-1977, collected by the Taylor Institution. The two largest groups are nine letters on the subject of translations of Louis Golding's Magnolia Street (1932), though none are written by Golding; and eight letters concerning the Macray family history, especially concerning the Librarian John Macray.

The collection also includes three autographs of Bache Matthews, and a single autograph of each of the following: John Bellows, E.S. Davis, Charles Edward Doble, Julian Huxley, Roy Clement Knight, Francis Knollys, Mark Pattison, Keith Piercy, Enid Starkie, Paget Jackson Toynbee, Henry Fanshawe Tozer and Joseph Wright.

John Bellows (1831-1902), printer, lexicographer and archaeologist; E.S. Davis (fl. 1926); Charles Edward Doble (1847-1914); Julian Huxley (1887-1975), zoologist and philosopher; Roy Clement Knight (b. 1907), scholar of French; Francis Knollys (1837-1924), courtier; Bache Matthews (fl. 1906); Mark Pattison (1813-84), college head and scholar; Keith Piercy (fl. 1978-9); Enid Starkie (1897-1970), scholar of French; Paget Jackson Toynbee (1855-1932), Dante scholar; Henry Fanshawe Tozer (1829-1916), geographer and classical scholar; Joseph Wright (1855-1930), philologist. There are also letters on the subject of Louis Golding's novel, Magnolia Street (1932); and letters relating to the Macray family, especially to John Macray (1796-1878), the first librarian of the Taylor Institution. The letters and papers came to the Taylor Institution Library during the librarianship of the late Donald Martell Sutherland, Librarian 1949-70. Many were acquired from dealers' catalogues or in the course of numerous visits to bookshops both in England and on the Continent; others came by gift, largely from the estate of Professor H.G. Fiedler, Taylor Professor of German 1907-37.
