HOCKWOLD, NORFOLK [FR NORF 17]

Consists of loose accounts, invoices and receipts of Sir Cyrill WYCHE of Hockwold, Norfolk 1681-1723

Sir Cyril WYCHE, son of Sir Peter Wyche who was for some years ambassador to the Sultan of Turkey under Charles I, was born at Constantinople in about 1632. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. In May 1660 he was knighted at The Hague by Charles II. He was a founder-member of the Royal Society and President from 1683 to 1684. In 1695 he became, like his father before him, ambassador in Turkey. He eventually became secretary to the lieutenancy of Ireland, sat for many years in Parliament and was in 1693 made one of the lords justices of Ireland. He purchased Poywings, in the parish of Hockwold, co. Norfolk. He married first a daughter of Sir Thomas Jermyn; secondly Lady Perrott and thirdly, a daughter of George Evelyn, brother of the diarist John Evelyn. Sir Cyril Wyche died at Hockwold on 1707 December 29
