Scope and Content

The two volumes which comprise this collection provide a personal miscellany of manuscript notes transcribed from a variety of sources. These are not always identified. They include, for instance, 'The Gentleman's Magazine'. The subject matter is varied. Literary items include poems and epigrams. Events are described, and opinions associated with writers, politicians and theologians. Places mentioned range from the Moon and Mexico to Stratford-upon-Avon; occasional items include, for example, the nutritional value of different foods. Longer passages include 'Outline of a rational system of education'; 'Definition of the term [political] party'; a description of a number of towns in Switzerland and Germany; and observations on children and families.

There are no obvious clues as to the compiler of the extracts. The first volume was started in April 1824 and the second is dated October 1824.
