The Tuke Housing Association Ltd (THA) was founded in 1971 by members of Friargate Quaker Meeting House, with the support of the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust. Its initial aim was to develop the site of the former Quaker burial ground in Bishophill, together with an adjoining caretaker's cottage and six garages. THA completed a block of six flats on the site in 1975, named 'Tuke House' in honour of the prominent York Quaker family.
THA was a registered housing association. Between 1971 and 1994 the daily administration of the Association was carried out by the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust and then by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. In 1991 THA took over Leeds Quaker Housing Association, which it ran until 1994 when York Housing Association became the THA's managing agent and the Leeds association was transferred to the management of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust.
The Associated provided a number of valuable social housing projects in and around York, including the Scarcroft Project which provided independent living and support to young people leaving care, and its partnership with YACRO (the Yorkshire Association for Care and Resettlement of Offenders). The Association also owned a large number of properties in the city, including property in Scarcroft Road, Friargate, Castlegate, Walmgate, and Yearsley Crescent.
The Association transferred its engagements, stock and property to York Housing Association between 2009 and 2012, having been unable to find volunteers to take key positions in its management committee. It ceased to function in 2012 and was de-registered that same year.

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

The archive was gifted to the Borthwick Institute in 2012 by Tuke Housing Association Ltd.
