The compiler and provenance of this photograph album are unknown. It captures a diverse range of subjects and places. Captions have been reproduced as they appear in the album. The majority of photographs relate to New Zealand and most are the work of Arthur James Isles (1870-1943), probably the son of the Oamaru photographer James Isles. Arthur Isles established a studio at Thames in the early 1890s and later settled in Rotorua. He exhibited at the Christchurch International Exhibition of 1906/7 and was active into the 1920s. Isles specialised in Maori photography, and his images include portraits of women and men, views of meeting houses, and landscapes (Y3089FF/1-25, 37, 39-40, 42-44, 47-48, 50, 52-54). The other photographs in the album relate to Montenegro, Bosnia- Hercegovina, Norway, Samoa and Fiji. Several of the photographs of Samoa were taken by A.J. Tattersall, who was born in Auckland in 1861. He worked for the photographic firms of Redfen and later Tuttles and Co, Auckland, before travelling to Apia, Samoa, to work for J. Davis. He took over the business on the death of Davis in 1893. Tattersall made a photographic record of the Samoan Civil War of 1899.
