Administrative / Biographical History

The William Carey (Baptist) Society was formed in 1951 to give spiritual and social fellowship to all Baptists at the university. It also aimed to forge links between the university and other local Baptist churches. Activities offered by the Society included monthly meetings where prominent local Baptists spoke, weekly prayer meetings, Sunday afternoon study groups, summer rambles and Sunday evening social events. Information about the Society appeared in the Students' Union handbook.

The Society, along with other similar groups, such as the Anglican Society, was represented by the Christian Association which promoted study, mission and corporate prayer within the university. The William Carey Society was also affiliated to the Baptist Students' Federation.

From the beginning of the 1979/1980 academic year, the Society merged with the United Reformed Church Society to form the United Reformed Baptist Society. The merger was caused partly by the absence of a full-time chaplain on campus which resulted in students leading the society. This was made difficult by a fall in the number of members, and the commitment of existing members to other groups, such as the Christian Union.
